Designated Prime Minister Siegfried Mureșan said Saturday, at Parliament, that the failure of PSD lawmakers to participate in the investiture vote for the government he proposed would show a lack of respect for Parliament and constitute a hostile act against the President of Romania.
The statement was made after the government program and the list of ministers were submitted. Mureșan was responding to reports that Social Democratic lawmakers would be present on the day of the vote to ensure a quorum, but would not vote.
The designated prime minister said it was “strange” for PSD, a party led by Chamber of Deputies President Sorin Grindeanu, to boycott a parliamentary session. He argued that such a decision would defy the Constitution, the appointment procedure and the head of state, who is attempting to resolve the political crisis through the constitutional means available.
Mureșan said he would continue his dialogue with parliamentary groups and representatives of national minorities. He assured them that the government’s measures would not diminish the role of minorities and explained that the reduction in their number would reflect the population decline indicated by the latest census.
