PSD leaders met on Tuesday to decide the party's position after President Nicușor Dan nominated Luca Niculescu for the position of prime minister. During the meeting, Sorin Grindeanu requested an open mandate for negotiations and said that PSD was willing to enter government, but not under just any conditions.
Grindeanu expressed his disappointment at not being nominated prime minister and described the proposal as one „with an external, non-confrontational profile, of the Cioloș type,” saying that it „has nothing to do with the PSD electorate.” He stated that he did not support a government formed exclusively by PSD and did not want the party to depend on Ilie Bolojan.
During the discussions, several leaders called for direct negotiations with Luca Niculescu, followed by a decision on entering government. Daniel Zamfir spoke about a six-month government intended to unblock the situation, while Gheorghe Șoldan warned that PSD would not be forgiven if it maintained instability. Bogdan Ivan, however, argued that the party should not enter government „at any cost.”
Other leaders advocated remaining in opposition. Gabriel Zetea considered participation in government a mistake, while Vasile Dîncu said that PSD had been sent into opposition. Alfred Simonis stated that the association with Nicușor Dan „has begun to harm” the party and did not rule out the scenario of early elections.
At the end, Grindeanu reportedly told his colleagues that this was „a turning point for PSD” and that the party needed to carefully weigh the decision. The discussions ended without a final decision on entering government.
