PNL President Ilie Bolojan said on Sunday evening in Timișoara that there was no question of him being replaced as head of the party, since decisions regarding the liberals’ direction had been adopted by a substantial majority. He announced that the PNL would enter opposition and would no longer have an institutional partnership with the PSD in the period ahead.
Bolojan explained that the decision to end political cooperation with the Social Democrats was based both on considerations related to Romania and on the PNL’s future. The liberal leader told those who do not support this direction that they could leave the party, rejecting the idea that the PNL should become “a clone or a keychain of the PSD.”
The PNL president noted that the liberals’ representation in the leadership of certain institutions and local administrations could not be changed immediately. This is the result of the political cooperation with the PSD in 2024, in several counties. PNL representatives will continue to carry out their mandates, but the party will no longer cooperate institutionally with the PSD.
