PNL President Ilie Bolojan announced on Tuesday, in Parliament’s plenary session, that the liberals would vote to invest the government led by Luca Niculescu, in what he called a “vote of necessity” to end the political crisis.
Bolojan argued that the interim government led by the PNL had kept Romania afloat and had not left behind “any difficult legacy.” He rejected the PSD’s accusations and stated that the budget had been stabilized, while the state’s structural problems could not have been solved during the five months in which the interim government had limited powers.
The liberal leader warned that prolonging the crisis could affect public services, including emergency rooms, ambulance services, and other essential services, in the absence of a budget rectification that can be adopted only by a fully empowered government.
The PNL will not join the government and will not negotiate positions, Bolojan specified, but it will support maintaining the European direction and reforming the state. He criticized several members of the future cabinet for delays in areas such as public-sector pay, healthcare, and the judiciary.
“Today we all face a decision: do we continue the political crisis or do we end it politically? For the PNL, it would be simple to vote against it. When you hear Mr. Grindeanu, you realize how difficult it is for you, but at what cost to the country?” Bolojan said, according to stirileprotv.ro.
Bolojan announced that the PNL would enter opposition and actively monitor the new government’s activity, sanctioning any potential deviations. Responsibility for executive decisions will belong to the Niculescu Government and the designated prime minister, the liberal leader also said.
