Elena Udrea claims that PNL mayors and county council presidents are preparing to replace Ilie Bolojan as party leader

Elena Udrea claims that Ilie Bolojan’s term as leader of the PNL is nearing its end, amid discontent in the regions and pressure exerted by the party’s mayors and presidents of county councils.

The former Minister of Transport told Realitatea PLUS that local PNL leaders could call for Bolojan’s departure if he fails to find solutions for the party to enter government or for financing local projects. Udrea also referred to a meeting at which, although approximately 40 mayors were expected, only two allegedly attended, considering that this episode indicates the beginning of an internal movement against the liberal leader.

She further stated that there are calls within the party to organize a congress and that Bolojan could be removed from office. Meanwhile, Udrea warned of economic pressure on the government, in the context of unpaid debts and the difficulties faced by companies. According to her, approximately 30,000 companies were dissolved in the first six months.

Ilie Bolojan, however, rejects the scenario of his replacement. The PNL president stated that he holds the position as a result of decisions made by a congress and the party leadership and that replacing him is not under consideration. The political context is marked by the dismissal of the government led by Bolojan on May 5, 2026, and by the PNL’s subsequent decision not to enter government alongside the PSD.

Shortly before the internal disputes subsequently cited, Ilie Bolojan stated that the PNL would no longer govern together with the PSD and proposed supporting the investiture of a technocratic government from outside the Executive, with a parliamentary agreement on specific objectives, including the adoption of the budget. At the same time, he criticized the PSD for repeatedly causing political crises and announced that the PNL was willing to support a government solution without joining it.

Subsequently, Bolojan called on liberals to vote for the investiture of the Government led by Luca Niculescu, citing the need to end the “interim period” and warning that the Executive was facing major budgetary problems, including insufficient funds for the operation of certain institutions and services. In the same context, he also warned that the PNL would “penalize” budgetary deviations in order to avoid destabilization and a possible economic crisis, while the PNL’s vote in favor of the Government’s measures was described as one of “necessity.”
