Sorin Grindeanu says the DIICOT investigation could end Călin Georgescu’s political career if the allegations are confirmed

PSD leader Sorin Grindeanu said Monday evening that Călin Georgescu could leave politics if the allegations made by DIICOT prove true. The reaction came after the former presidential candidate was detained for 24 hours in a case involving fraud with particularly serious consequences and the formation of an organized criminal group.

“If he is proven guilty, Călin Georgescu will obviously be out of politics,” Grindeanu said in an interview with Antena 3 CNN. The Social Democratic leader stressed that he did not want to issue verdicts before the investigation was completed.

Grindeanu said Georgescu must also answer questions about his sources of income and his unexpected rise in the November 2024 presidential election. Regarding reports that he had been supported by structures originating from the former regime, the PSD leader said he had no evidence, but those making the allegations must present it.

Georgescu was detained after nearly nine hours of searches at his home in Mogoșoaia. He invoked his right to remain silent. Businessman Ionel Rusen was also detained in the same case. DIICOT announced that, following the searches, jamming systems, documents, storage devices and documents suspected of being false were seized. The two were due to be brought before the Bucharest Tribunal with a proposal for 30 days of pretrial detention.
