Germany's ambassador to Bucharest rejects accusations that Germany controls Siegfried Mureșan

Germany’s ambassador to Bucharest, Angela Ganninger, has rejected allegations that Berlin controls Siegfried Mureșan, the prime minister designated by President Nicușor Dan. In an interview with Digi24, the diplomat said that Mureșan is “a Romanian politician” who defends Romania’s interests in European negotiations.

Angela Ganninger said claims of alleged German influence over the politician were “far-fetched and unrealistic.” The ambassador explained that, including in discussions regarding the European Union’s multiannual financial framework, Siegfried Mureșan supports Romania’s positions, not those of Germany.

The diplomat said the allegations are part of campaigns intended to damage Mureșan’s image and make him less acceptable to Romanian voters. “We do not control Mr. Mureșan,” Ganninger said, adding that in Berlin he is perceived as a politician who negotiates in favor of his country.

The ambassador also criticized the way such information is picked up by some television stations and distributed on social media. She warned that repeating unverified claims can give them an appearance of credibility and described the spread of these messages as large-scale disinformation. The statements come as Siegfried Mureșan is portrayed in the public sphere as a politician close to Germany.
