The German official for whom Siegfried Mureșan worked: The accusations that he serves Germany’s interests, not Romania’s, are “completely absurd”

Gunther Krichbaum, a German official and former head of the CDU/CSU group’s Romania portfolio, called “completely absurd” the allegations that Siegfried Mureșan represents Germany’s interests rather than Romania’s. He made the statement in an interview with Cotidianul, as Mureșan is the prime minister-designate.

Krichbaum explained that Germany’s interests are represented internationally by the Federal Government and embassies, and within European institutions by the MEPs elected in Germany. Similarly, Romanian MEPs represent Romania’s interests, the official noted.

He said he met Mureșan in 2006, when the young Romanian took part in the International Parliamentary Scholarship, a Bundestag program for professionals from Central and Southeastern Europe. Impressed by his training and commitment, Krichbaum later hired him in his parliamentary office.

During the ratification of Romania’s accession treaty to the European Union, Mureșan reportedly provided him with information about his native country, helping support accession in the Bundestag. In 2009, he continued his career in Brussels.
