Former mayor Decebal Făgădău appointed prefect of Constanța County / He was acquitted in two cases opened by the DNA

Former mayor of the municipality of Constanța, Decebal Făgădău, has been appointed prefect of Constanța County, with the decision adopted on Friday during the Government meeting and announced by the county organization of the PSD. The appointment marks his return to an important public office, after a period during which he left the party and was targeted in two cases handled by the DNA.

Făgădău resigned from the PSD in October 2020, on the same day that the Constanța DNA indicted him in a criminal case. At the time, he was submitting his candidacy for a seat in Parliament, after losing the elections for Constanța City Hall to Vergil Chițac. Subsequently, the former mayor was indicted in another case as well, but he was acquitted in both cases.

Before the 2024 elections, Decebal Făgădău rejoined the PSD and supported Horia Constantinescu for Constanța City Hall. At the beginning of 2026, he expressed his intention to run for the leadership of the county organization, following the departure of Felix Stroe. The position was ultimately taken over by Daniel Georgescu, the sole candidate.

Georgescu had publicly criticized Făgădău in the past, stating that he could not win Constanța City Hall without the support of the PSD organization. In the message sent on Friday, PSD Constanța presented the new prefect as an administration specialist and a dialogue partner for the community.

Shortly before the decision, the Government dismissed Adrian-Teodor Picoiu from the position of prefect of Constanța County after he failed to provide proof of completing the specialized training program for prefects and deputy prefects within the statutory two-year deadline.

Meanwhile, at the local level, the National Anticorruption Directorate had sent the director general of the Constanța Local Police General Directorate, Ionuț Dumitru, to trial, accusing him of abuse of office after prosecutors alleged that he had ordered 60 reports concerning contraventions, with fines totaling 108,521 lei, to be removed from the civil circuit.
