Liviu Macovei announced his resignation as prefect of Vrancea County in a post published on Facebook, amid the National Liberal Party’s decision to enter opposition. He said the resignation was a considered and natural decision, given that he held the positions of deputy prefect and prefect with the party’s support.

Macovei is ending his tenure after nearly one year and two months as deputy prefect and approximately six months as prefect. He was appointed prefect of Vrancea County in April 2026 and said he had carried out his duties with seriousness, integrity and respect for citizens.

In his farewell message, the former prefect thanked the employees of the Prefect’s Office, the leadership of the institutions represented on the Prefectural College, as well as the representatives of the Vrancea Emergency Situations Inspectorate and the County Gendarmerie Inspectorate for their cooperation. Macovei acknowledged that some things could have been done better and that certain problems should have been resolved more quickly.

He announced that he would continue to be involved in community life and in the PNL’s activities. The resignation is part of the broader context in which the party leadership asked officials supported by the party to resign from their posts as the PNL moved into opposition.
