Andrei Nistor resigned as prefect of Bucharest following the appointment of Marian Neacșu as Minister of Internal Affairs and Deputy Prime Minister in the government led by Luca Niculescu. Nistor called the decision “a slap in the face to all decent people” in the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

In a message posted on Facebook, the former prefect argued that the Social Democratic Party (PSD) should have proposed someone without a criminal conviction to lead the Ministry of Internal Affairs. In 2016, Marian Neacșu was definitively sentenced to six months in prison, suspended, for conflict of interest after hiring his daughter at his parliamentary office. Authorities later stated that he had been rehabilitated and that the legal effects of the conviction had been removed.

Prime Minister Luca Niculescu defended the appointment, saying that Neacșu has experience and expertise in public administration. The government was approved by Parliament with 280 votes.

Nistor announced that he would provide free support for the Prefecture’s digitalization project and proposed solutions to reduce costs related to the institution’s headquarters, for which approximately 50,000 euros are paid each month. He thanked the Prefecture’s employees and asked that they be allowed to carry out their work without interference.
