PNL lawmaker Ion Iordache announced on Thursday that he is resigning as president of the PNL Gorj county organization, saying he wants greater freedom to express his positions in Parliament. He said he remains a member of the party, will retain his seat as a lawmaker and is not abandoning his projects for the county.

In a message titled “A Decision for Conscience,” Iordache said he had been considering resigning for several months but postponed the decision because he had invested time, energy and hope in leading the organization. According to the lawmaker, his position as county leader had begun to limit his public expression, as some of his views did not coincide with the party’s decisions.

Iordache said he had consistently defended his constituents, including when his views were not convenient for the PNL. He explained that, after resigning, he would be able to speak more clearly about Gorj’s problems, without his statements being interpreted through the lens of a party position or an obligation to support decisions he does not believe in.

The lawmaker said he would continue to cooperate with Gorj’s liberals on joint projects and thanked the colleagues who had supported him. As of Thursday, no successor had been announced for the position of president of PNL Gorj.
