Senator Cosmina Cerva, leader of the PACE – First Romania group in the Senate, declared Thursday, after nearly five hours of consultations at Cotroceni Palace, that her party would support any political government presenting a plan for Romania’s recovery.

Cerva stated that, according to President Nicușor Dan’s conclusion, the parties that took part in the discussions had not yet fully understood the gravity of the situation facing the country. The senator argued that responsibility for the recovery lies particularly with the parties that were part of the governing coalition.

The leader of the PACE group specified that the party would not impose “red lines,” which she said had represented the personal ambitions of political leaders and contributed to the current deadlock. The party is willing to support a political government that comes with concrete measures to overcome the crisis.

Cosmina Cerva also announced that the PACE group would vote for the first nominee for the position of prime minister, if the nominee is a political figure. She rejected the idea of another government led by a technocratic prime minister, arguing that such formulas had not worked in Romania.

“Unfortunately, his position or conclusion, after today’s nearly five-hour consultations, was that those who came to the consultations still have not fully understood the very serious situation Romania is in, a situation to which almost everyone contributed, and it is the obligation of those who were in the coalition to now restore Romania. We will support any political government that comes with a governance plan for Romania’s recovery and that, once again, I repeat, has no red lines, because those red lines did nothing but lead to the situation we are in today. These red lines were, in fact, personal ambitions of party leaders, who were falling over themselves to say we don’t want this, before coming to tell Romanian citizens that it is time to start building. We no longer want governments and experiments with technocratic prime ministers, because it has been demonstrated in Romania that this style of government does not work, and so we are waiting for the first nomination to be made tonight or tomorrow,” the PACE senator said.
