Traian Băsescu, former president of Romania, criticized in a phone intervention at Digi24 the behavior of President Nicușor Dan, accusing him of delaying the appointment of a new candidate for the position of prime minister, thus contributing to the political crisis in the country. Băsescu emphasized that the president should have made a nomination, even at the risk that it might not be accepted by Parliament. He mentioned that Sigfried Mureșan's option would have been a more suitable choice, warning that the current situation is blocked due to the president's inaction.

"We have 60 days in which the president must make two appointments that do not go through Parliament to open the option that can be one, a solution, the option of early elections. Attention! The president is not obliged, after two government collapses, to trigger early elections. He can try a third time and a fifth time and an eighth time, but he is not allowed to forgo this instrument in a situation of political blockage, because, after all, he has the responsibility to unblock the political situation. That’s why I don’t understand Nicușor why he hasn’t made the second appointment. He should see, it goes well, it doesn’t go well, he has a government, it doesn’t go very well, he has the conditions to use at some point a third solution to get over the political crisis, namely early elections.

President Nicușor Dan, whom I supported - and I open a parenthesis - if he were again in competition with Simion, I would still support Nicușor, but now I criticize him because he is not doing what he should. So Mr. Nicușor Dan has simply abandoned his role as president. He started to communicate to the parties: "Until you give me a candidate with 51%, I will not appoint." But from where to where? In what Constitution does it say that the parties must ensure the nomination of a candidate who has 51%? No, that is the job of the one you appoint. The one you appointed must ensure the majority. If not, he falls in Parliament and conditions are created for another solution to the crisis, namely early elections," Traian Băsescu conveyed.
