AUR reaffirms its support for Călin Georgescu and announces that it is not changing its political position following the decision of the Bucharest Court of Appeal, which ordered his preventive detention for 30 days. The reaction from the party led by George Simion was issued on Tuesday evening.
The party maintains that the preventive measure does not constitute a conviction and calls for respect for the presumption of innocence, the right to a defense and the right to a fair trial. AUR warned that using the case for “settling scores” or political pressure would be unacceptable in a democratic state.
The Bucharest Court of Appeal’s decision overturned the ruling of the Bucharest Tribunal, which had previously rejected the preventive detention measure. According to AUR, the party remains supportive of Călin Georgescu and endorses the principle that no one can be considered guilty before a final conviction.
In the same statement, AUR said it would not vote for the government led by Siegfried Mureșan, whose investiture vote is scheduled for Wednesday, if the party is not part of the executive. The party rejected the idea that the court’s decision could be used to influence its vote or to negotiate its political convictions.
