AUR President George Simion said Tuesday evening that he would continue to support Călin Georgescu, claiming that the former presidential candidate’s cases were “political” and brought by people who control state institutions. He made the statements on TVR 1.
Simion said the case concerning the alleged overthrow of the constitutional order was a “fabrication” and accused authorities of pursuing “fabricated trials,” which he claimed were initiated after Georgescu allegedly urged people not to take part in unrest. The AUR leader also criticized the functioning of certain institutions and spoke about problems concerning the rule of law, democracy and the judiciary.
Asked how Călin Georgescu makes a living, Simion said he did not know the source of his income. He nevertheless said he did not consider the question relevant in relation to the accusations against the former candidate and mentioned that 5,000 euros had allegedly been found in Georgescu’s home.
George Simion also said that he had spoken with Cristela Georgescu, who was summoned to DIICOT, and that he had supported Călin Georgescu since December 2024, despite criticism that he was an opportunist.
