Former judge Andrea Chiș has accepted the nomination for the position of Minister of Justice in the future government led by designated Prime Minister Siegfried Mureșan. She announced on Friday that the proposal took her by surprise and that it was the result of an agreement between the coalition’s three formations.
In a message published on Facebook, Andrea Chiș recounted that she was contacted on Thursday by Siegfried Mureșan, who allegedly told her that she was “the technocrat whom” all three parties had “agreed on.” The former judge said she accepted because she had consistently spoken about the need to take responsibility for judicial reform and had not shied away from public responsibilities.
Chiș emphasized that her nomination did not belong to a single party and that it was “pleasant to know that you come from agreement, not conflict.” However, she pointed out that changes in the system depend not only on the minister, but on Parliament as a whole and on society.
Andrea Chiș was a judge for 28 years and a member of the Superior Council of Magistracy between 2017 and 2023. She worked at courts in Cluj and holds a doctorate in legal sciences. Currently, she coordinates a center at Babeș-Bolyai University and runs projects in the Republic of Moldova.
According to the political agreement, PNL is expected to receive seven ministries, USR five, and UDMR three. The Ministry of Justice would go to an independent. The list of ministers and the governing program were due to be submitted to Parliament on Saturday.
