Andrea Chiș, proposed for the position of Minister of Justice, received a negative opinion from the parliamentary committee responsible, as part of the procedure for forming the new Government. The former judge stated that she currently receives a service pension of 40,000 lei.
Chiș retired from the judiciary in 2023, at the age of 52. Asked about the amount of the pension, she specified that the sum had not been determined by her and maintained that her public position had been consistent: judges’ pensions should not exceed the salary received while working.
During the hearing, lawmakers also questioned her about her retirement before reaching the standard age and about statements according to which judges who meet the retirement conditions should remain in the system. Andrea Chiș stated that money was not what drove her to become a judge, advance to a particular court, become a member of the Superior Council of Magistracy, or retire.
She also said that any reduction in service pensions already being paid does not depend on the Minister of Justice, but on decisions by the Constitutional Court. Andrea Chiș is a former judge and former member of the Superior Council of Magistracy.
