Starting next week, Meta will implement a warning system for parents in the UK, USA, Australia, and Canada, informing them if teenagers in 'Teen Accounts' frequently search for content related to suicide or self-harm. Alerts will be sent via text messages, email, or WhatsApp, accompanied by suggestions to initiate difficult conversations with children. This is the first time Meta proactively informs parents about such searches, replacing the previous method of blocking dangerous terms. Critics, including from the Molly Rose Foundation, warn that these alerts could create panic and do not address the underlying issue of young people's access to harmful content. Meta argues that the alerts will include resources for parents and that the measure is part of efforts to make social networks safer for minors. The system will be expanded globally after the initial launch.
