In the face of an aging population, Barcelona has started a pilot program introducing social robots to support elderly individuals living alone. These robots, like Sandi, help manage medication, schedule appointments, and provide companionship.
So far, the city has distributed approximately 600 robots, with a budget of 3.8 million euros from the European Union's COVID-19 recovery funds. The project aims not only to provide companionship but also safety, with robots capable of detecting falls and alerting professionals.
In Spain, nearly two million people over the age of 65 live alone, and the care sector is facing a staff shortage. These robots are not meant to replace caregivers but to complement human care, offering support and companionship to the elderly.
