Marine Le Pen’s protégé wants Ukraine to pay for aid from the European Union

Jordan Bardella, leader of France’s far-right National Rally party, has called for financial and military support for Ukraine to no longer be unconditional. He made the statements at the Ambrosetti Forum in Cernobbio, Italy, amid pressure on France’s public finances.

Bardella argued that Paris should obtain some form of “counterpart” in return for the aid provided to Kyiv. He cited France’s high levels of debt and deficits and deemed it irresponsible to take on expenses without guarantees.

The politician praised the American model, in which support for Ukraine is linked to economic commitments, including access to natural resources. If his party were to govern, Bardella would not abandon Ukraine, but would condition aid on the use of funds to purchase military equipment from European companies.

His position differs from that of President Emmanuel Macron, who is seeking to strengthen France’s role in supporting Kyiv. Bardella, considered a possible future prime minister if Marine Le Pen wins, promotes a vision close to that of Donald Trump, focused on sovereignty and national interests.
