Chinese President Xi Jinping will make a state visit to the United States, Beijing confirms

Chinese President Xi Jinping will make a state visit to the United States from September 23 to 25, 2026, at the invitation of U.S. President Donald Trump, China’s Foreign Ministry confirmed Monday. The trip will mark the two leaders’ second summit this year and their third face-to-face meeting since Trump returned to the White House in January 2025.

The visit had been considered nearly settled for several weeks, but Beijing had not officially confirmed it until now. The talks will take place amid strategic rivalry between the two major economic powers and will address trade, tariffs, artificial intelligence, the conflicts in Iran and Ukraine, as well as the situation in Taiwan.

Trump visited China in May, when he met with Xi Jinping in Beijing. The U.S. president described the trip at the time as “very successful” and “unforgettable,” saying that the two sides had reached consensus and concluded several agreements.

Bilateral relations remain marked by tensions. The two leaders agreed to a fragile truce in October 2025, after months of trade war, but a lasting agreement has not yet been reached. Meanwhile, China’s exports to the United States rose by 34.4% in August compared with the same period last year.
