US President Donald Trump intends to personally greet his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, upon his arrival in the United States next week at Joint Base Andrews, near Washington, according to a senior US official cited by Reuters and News.ro.
The gesture would be unusual under US diplomatic protocol, as US presidents rarely go to the airport to greet visiting foreign leaders. Xi Jinping’s schedule will include an official ceremony at the White House, a military parade in the Rose Garden and a state dinner.
Executives from some of the most important technology companies in the US are expected to attend the dinner, including Jeff Bezos, Sundar Pichai, Sam Altman, Tim Cook, Elon Musk, Jensen Huang and Michael Dell.
Trump and Xi Jinping’s discussions will focus on key issues in the relationship between the two countries: trade, global rare-earth flows and the development of artificial intelligence. The visit comes as Washington and Beijing seek to manage economic and technological tensions between the United States and China.
