On December 6, thousands of people participated in the marches in Athens to commemorate 17 years since the killing of Alexandros Grigoropoulos, a 15-year-old teenager shot dead by a police officer in 2008. Although the demonstrations started peacefully, the situation deteriorated around 8:00 PM, when approximately 400 participants clashed with the security forces.
The police intervened with tear gas, resulting in 16 arrests and another 54 detentions for checks. Grigoropoulos was killed in the Exarchia neighborhood, the incident triggering massive nationwide riots. The police officer Epaminondas Korkoneas, who fired the shot, was sentenced to life in prison, but his sentence was reduced in 2019, causing new protests. The date of December 6 remains a symbol of anger against police violence in Greece.
