The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, stated that the new proposals of the European Union regarding the use of frozen Russian assets send a clear message to Moscow: the continuation of the war in Ukraine will have costly consequences. This initiative was discussed with the American administration, including with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who had a positive reaction.
Von der Leyen also invited other countries that have frozen Russian assets to participate in a common mechanism proposed by the EU. Regarding support for Ukraine, she emphasized the Union's long-term commitment to support Kyiv, mentioning that Russia has the resources to prolong the conflict and shows no intention of responding to President Zelensky's invitations to negotiations. Von der Leyen reaffirmed the desire for peace, emphasizing that prolonging the war will have a high cost for Russia.
