The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) has announced that the fleet consisting of 15 battleships named after Donald Trump could have a total cost of 275 billion dollars, making them among the most expensive warships ever built in the United States.
The first nuclear-powered ship would cost approximately 23.4 billion dollars, while the subsequent ones would average 18 billion dollars each. In comparison, the USS Gerald Ford, the largest aircraft carrier in the world, cost 13.3 billion dollars in 2008.
The project was announced by the American president in December and includes heavily armed ships with anti-aircraft missiles, hypersonic weapons, and an electromagnetic gun. These battleships will be larger than current destroyers but with a slightly lower displacement (the volume of water displaced by the hull) than those of the Iowa class, which were retired in the 1990s.
