The Pentagon estimates that military operations conducted in the war with Iran have generated costs of more than 47 billion dollars, according to the latest assessment, at a time when the conflict is affecting global energy prices and political support for Republicans ahead of the November 3 elections.
The largest portion of the sum, more than 29 billion dollars, would be needed to replace expended munitions. Another more than 6 billion dollars would be spent replacing lost military equipment and platforms, including numerous drones and aircraft.
President Donald Trump’s initial strategy involved using costly precision missiles against Iranian defense systems, followed by the use of cheaper bombs, such as JDAM. However, the April ceasefire reportedly allowed Iran to rebuild part of its military capabilities and reactivate defense systems, missiles, and drones.
Subsequently, the US administration imposed a naval blockade to limit Iranian oil exports. US officials say the Pentagon is preparing to resume intense fighting if it receives the order after the midterm elections. The current estimate is close to the one presented in July by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who assessed the cost of the war at 37.5 billion dollars. The figures do not clearly include any potential repairs to US bases damaged by Iranian missile and drone attacks.
