The Pentagon asked officials at the U.S. Central Command several days ago to finalize plans for resuming large-scale military operations in Iran, according to U.S. officials cited by Axios. The directive does not set a date for the attacks, and President Donald Trump has not yet made a final decision.
Potential operations could include bombings of Iranian targets in the energy, infrastructure, and nuclear program sectors. According to U.S. and Israeli sources, the attacks could take place before the U.S. congressional elections and possibly before the elections in Israel.
Discussions regarding a new offensive intensified after Trump's national security team meeting at Camp David, held on Friday. The possibility of resuming operations in Iran was reportedly also discussed at the meeting. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that the meeting focused on long-term foreign policy planning.
Negotiations between Washington and Tehran have made no progress. Mediators in Qatar are awaiting Iran's response to the U.S. counterproposal, which includes demands concerning the nuclear program. Meanwhile, Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke by phone about the regional situation.
