The President of the USA, Donald Trump, had a phone conversation with his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky, in which he promised that he would try to stop the war in Ukraine within 30 days.
This was the first conversation between the two leaders after their meeting in Davos in January. According to Axios, which cites a Ukrainian official, Trump emphasized that the hostilities are lasting too long and expressed hope that the war would end this year. Zelensky thanked for the American support and emphasized that Trump could exert the necessary pressure on Vladimir Putin to reach an agreement. The discussion also included the possibility of organizing a trilateral summit between Zelensky, Trump, and Putin, with the aim of overcoming territorial divergences. Trump confirmed the United States' willingness to provide security guarantees to Ukraine as part of a potential peace agreement. In contrast, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov questioned the usefulness of a meeting between Zelensky and Putin, considering Ukraine's current positions. Despite the Russian bombings, Trump's special envoy, Steve Witkoff, expressed optimism about the progress in peace negotiations, anticipating a summit between leaders.
