The government in Madrid declared that American President Donald Trump has changed his tone towards Spain, just a few hours after threatening to halt trade relations. This change came after Trump realized that Spain has increased its contributions to NATO in recent years.

At the NATO summit in Ankara, Trump called Spain "a terrible partner" and ordered a halt to trade with it due to disputes over military spending and the war in Iran. However, on the way back, Trump acknowledged that the Spaniards have met the financial requests, mentioning that Madrid will reach the NATO target of 2% of GDP for defense by 2026.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez downplayed the dispute, describing the conversation with Trump as cordial. Trump had previously expressed frustration over Spain's refusal to accept new defense spending targets and to allow the use of airspace in conflicts. The United States has two important military bases in Spain.
