United States President Donald Trump said on Saturday, at the White House, that Washington and Havana will reach an agreement and stated that he does not consider military intervention in Cuba necessary.
The statement comes as the US administration has declared its objective of changing the Cuban government, while pressure on the island has intensified. An internal US Army document, reviewed by the American press, indicates that Washington is also preparing for the possibility of military action. Trump has repeatedly threatened Cuba and said that the country would be “conquered” or “liberated”.
The oil blockade imposed by the United States at the beginning of the year has aggravated Cuba’s economic crisis, as the country faces fuel shortages and power outages against a backdrop of inadequate infrastructure.
Trump said that the US wants to help Cuba and “open it up” to American citizens. On Tuesday, in a speech delivered at the UN General Assembly, he described Cuba as a failed state and said that “freedom will come” to the country. The Cuban delegation left the hall during the speech.
Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez subsequently stated that Havana remains open to dialogue and trade relations with American companies, while condemning the trade embargo maintained by the US for more than six decades.
