Donald Trump announces “major progress” for a U.S. military base in Poland: “This will be a historic step for our great U.S.-Poland alliance”

US President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that “major progress” is being made toward establishing a US Army base in Poland, a project he described as a possible historic step in relations between the two countries. The location is expected to be announced soon.

Trump praised the leadership of Polish President Karol Nawrocki, who said that Warsaw is ready to strengthen defense cooperation and offer the best possible site for the base. Two sites are currently being considered, and discussions regarding the final decision are ongoing.

The announcement was coordinated with the White House and scheduled for September 17, a date marking the anniversary of the Soviet invasion of Poland in 1939. A US delegation inspected the possible locations last week.

It is unclear whether the base will host permanently stationed US troops, an objective supported by Warsaw. Approximately 10,000 US military personnel are in Poland, most of them as part of rotating missions. The Polish government estimates the cost of the necessary infrastructure at 15–17 billion zlotys.
