The President of the United States, Donald Trump, attributed the violence that broke out in France during Saturday’s protests to immigration and called on French authorities to tighten border rules. The statements were made in a post published on the Truth Social platform.

Trump claimed that “France is burning” because of the arrival of people from a “completely different” world and urged the government in Paris to “close the borders” and take control of the situation.

The violence broke out during demonstrations organized in Paris and in several cities across the country. According to Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez, more than 1,800 people were arrested. Some protests degenerated, with participants setting buildings on fire, looting stores, and attacking law enforcement officers.

The demonstrations stemmed from grievances over the rising cost of living, the situation in high schools, and the deterioration of public services, but they were also fueled by demands related to social protection and high prices. The Interior Ministry estimates that 550,000 people took part in the protests, while the CGT union puts the figure at 800,000.

In Paris, clashes broke out in the Place de la République area, and police used tear gas. In Limoges, the town hall was seriously damaged by a fire. President Emmanuel Macron was scheduled to address the nation on Sunday evening.
