French President Emmanuel Macron announced judicial measures on Sunday evening against the people involved in the acts of vandalism and looting that took place on Saturday in several major cities. He warned that those responsible for the destruction and theft would have to answer before the law and repair the damage caused.

Macron asked the Government to analyze how the violence unfolded and explain why the intelligence services had not anticipated the scale of the incidents. The Interior Minister was tasked with clarifying the circumstances, while the president promised transparency and swift investigations.

The head of state called for a distinction to be made between vandals and demonstrators with legitimate grievances, acknowledging concerns about the cost of living and rising fuel prices. He attributed the price increases to the consequences of the conflict in the Persian Gulf and announced new diplomatic efforts to ensure the supply of fuel and gas.

Macron expressed his support for law enforcement forces, injured people, and affected merchants. Starting Monday, the prime minister will lead a crisis cell to mobilize aid and support the victims.

Context: France has experienced widespread protests, which have degenerated into violence and looting, and Macron has already called for punishments for attacking institutions

In the preceding days, protests organized in several French cities were sparked by grievances related to the high cost of living and conditions in education. At the same time, authorities reported that the demonstrations attracted massive mobilizations, but that some participants became involved in confrontations with law enforcement and acts of destruction.

Amid the escalation, a large number of arrests were recorded, and police officers and gendarmes were injured. In the capital, Paris, authorities announced a record number of detentions, while significant damage was reported in other cities, including a fire that severely affected a city hall.

Before the judicial measures announced later, President Emmanuel Macron condemned the violence and stated that the people who attacked institutions would be prosecuted. At the same time, he also convened crisis meetings to manage the spread of the protests and the risk that the grievances would spread to other segments of society.
