French President Emmanuel Macron condemned the violence during demonstrations on October 17 and announced that people who attacked prefectures, shops and town halls would be prosecuted and punished. The message was posted on X amid escalating clashes between protesters and law enforcement.

Macron said the French Republic would not tolerate violence and called for unity against those who, in his view, were trying to cause chaos and undermine institutions. The president also expressed his support for law enforcement, which he described as guarantors of the right to demonstrate peacefully.

Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu backed the head of state’s position and said police officers had faced violence of extreme intensity. He warned those who might try to turn the incidents into a political “warm-up” ahead of the 2027 presidential election that no one would impose their agenda through violence.

The prime minister’s statements were also interpreted as a reference to the radical left-wing party La France Insoumise and its leader, Jean-Luc Mélenchon.
