U.S. President Donald Trump used the riots and violent protests in France on Monday to attack his Democratic opponents as part of the campaign for the midterm elections on November 3. At a rally held in Kansas to support Republican Senator Roger Marshall, Trump claimed that the unrest in France represented a warning for the United States.
The White House leader linked the violence, fires, and looting in France to what he called the “radical Democrats” in the U.S. Trump stated that migrants, jihadists, and communists were responsible for the country’s deterioration, using images of burning buildings and bell towers to rally his voters. The statements were not accompanied by evidence supporting these accusations.
“If you want to see what is at stake in this election, you only have to look at what is happening in France,” Trump said.
Vice President JD Vance, in turn, used the protests in France to criticize liberal policies on diversity, integration, and immigration. His message, published on the X platform, urged Americans to view the situation in France as a possible scenario for the United States.
According to French authorities, approximately 550,000 people took part in protests on Saturday over the cost of living and conditions in the education system. The Interior Ministry announced 2,397 arrests and 997 injured officers, seven of them seriously. One protester died in Paris following cardiopulmonary arrest, while local traffic restrictions were imposed in several cities.
The midterm elections will determine control of Congress during the final two years of Trump’s term. Republicans are trying to retain their majority amid declining popular support.
