U.S. President Donald Trump described Marine Le Pen as France’s “conservative voice,” amid the violence and riots cited by the White House leader to support his anti-immigration rhetoric, Le Monde reports.
Asked by an AFP journalist in the Oval Office whether he supports Le Pen in the 2027 French presidential election, Trump said he does not know her personally and that she had been “treated badly.” He suggested that the situation could represent a form of political weaponization, but did not officially declare his support for her candidacy.
In recent days, the U.S. president has portrayed France as being affected by looting, arson and violence associated with migrants, jihadists and communists. At a rally in Kansas, Trump said the country was “under siege,” while in a message posted on Truth Social he called for the borders to be closed quickly.
The statements were made ahead of the midterm legislative elections in the United States, amid difficult circumstances for the Republican Party due to high inflation.
Marine Le Pen was convicted in March 2025 in a case involving the misuse of public funds. Information about a reduction in her sentence and the impact on her eligibility for the 2027 election must be confirmed through the final rulings of the competent courts.
