United States Vice President JD Vance accused immigration of contributing to the violence that broke out in France on Saturday, following protests organized in several cities against rising prices and problems in schools. The statements were made on the X platform after the Limoges city hall was severely affected by a fire.

Vance argued that progressive policies on diversity and immigration had ignored issues related to assimilation and compatibility. He stated that “Western progressives” had created the current situation and said he hoped France would put an end to the violence before other monuments were also set on fire.

The Republican politician linked the events in France to the special legislative elections that will take place on November 3 in the United States. Vance said that Americans should pay attention, claiming that this would be the future Democratic lawmakers want for the country.

More than 500,000 people took part in protests in France, and over 1,200 were arrested. Although most of the demonstrations were peaceful, groups of protesters attacked public buildings, shops, supermarkets, and police vehicles.

In Limoges, the fire destroyed a large part of the city hall. According to the regional prefect, the roof collapsed, and approximately two-thirds of the façade of the 143-year-old building disappeared. Vance is considered a possible Republican candidate in the 2028 U.S. presidential election and frequently criticizes European immigration policies.
