The President of the USA, Donald Trump, launched a violent attack against media institutions, accusing them of 'treason' and of spreading 'fake news' in the context of the war in Iran. In a post on Truth Social, Trump claimed that the corrupt press contributes to the creation of false narratives about the conflict. He expressed support for the Chairman of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), Brendan Carr, who threatened to revoke the licenses of television stations that promote distorted information.

Criticism of these statements came from Democrats and free speech advocacy organizations, which denounced the threats as a violation of the Constitution. Senator Elizabeth Warren emphasized that government censorship is illegal, and California Governor Gavin Newsom added that such actions are authoritarian. Even a Republican senator, Ron Johnson, challenged Carr's position, stating that he is a supporter of the First Amendment.

Free speech advocacy organizations criticized the threats as outrageously dangerous, warning that the government should not control the press. Additionally, members of the Trump administration, such as Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, also attacked the press, particularly CNN, for how it reported on the war. CNN's CEO, Mark Thompson, defended network journalism, emphasizing that politicians have an interest in discrediting critical reporting.
