The parliamentary group of the ruling Tisza party in Hungary has nominated Andras Baka, former president of the Supreme Court, for the position of president of the country. According to the MTI agency, Baka is expected to be elected on Tuesday by Parliament, in an election considered largely ceremonial.
This nomination is part of Prime Minister Peter Magyar's effort to dismantle the influence of former Prime Minister Viktor Orban. Magyar claims to have received a strong mandate from voters to implement these changes. The President of Hungary is elected by Parliament for a five-year term, not by direct vote. Baka's election comes after Parliament adopted a constitutional amendment that provides for the termination of the current president's term, Tamas Sulyok. The amendment, promoted by the new parliamentary majority, is part of the strategy to remove individuals associated with the former Orban government from key positions.
