The President of Hungary, Tamas Sulyok, promulgated on Saturday the 17th amendment to the Fundamental Law, which provides for the termination of his mandate on the day following the entry into force of the amendment. Sulyok stated that he does not have the constitutional competence to contest the amendment, even though it contradicts some fundamental principles. He described the amendment as an example of political abuse of power, stating that it severely affects Hungary's constitutional democracy and subordinates the presidential institution to the executive. The amendment was promoted by the government of Prime Minister Peter Magyar, who won the elections with a two-thirds majority. Sulyok, elected in 2024 with the support of the former Fidesz-KDNP majority, was to complete his term in March 2029. The Hungarian Parliament will elect a new president within 30 days, and until then, the duties will be exercised by the President of Parliament, Agnes Forsthoffer.
