The U.S. Department of the Treasury announced on Tuesday the easing of some sanctions imposed on Belarus, including the lifting of measures against the national airline Belavia and allowing transactions related to the presidential aircraft of President Alexander Lukashenko. This decision marks a significant step in the rapprochement of relations between the United States and Belarus, after years of isolating Minsk through sanctions.
Following a request from President Donald Trump, Belarus released 52 prisoners, and Belavia was granted permission to purchase components for its aircraft. The Treasury officially lifted sanctions against Belavia and issued a general license for the use of three previously sanctioned planes, including a Boeing 737 used as a presidential aircraft. However, many sanctions remain in place, especially those related to the 2020 presidential elections, which Washington considers to be fraudulent.
