The United States has entered a new government shutdown after Congress failed to pass the budget law by the deadline of January 30. This deadlock was triggered by recent violence in Minneapolis, which led to an alliance between Democrats and Republicans, thus blocking funding for the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Although the Senate agreed on a last-minute compromise to continue funding, the House of Representatives will not vote on the new bills until Monday. The agreed compromise includes the adoption of five budget bills and a special provision for the Department of Homeland Security, which oversees ICE. This allows for a temporary budget of two weeks, providing time for further negotiations between the two parties.
