The United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has announced significant progress in developing a system for refunding tariffs deemed illegal by the Supreme Court.
Brandon Lord, a CBP official, stated that the new portal for submitting claims is 60% to 85% complete, and processing claims could take up to 45 days. Although no exact date has been set for the system's launch, the estimated deadline is towards the end of April. The system will accept claims in phases, prioritizing recent customs declarations and those that are suspended or under review.
Approximately 26,664 importers have completed the necessary procedures for electronic refunds, representing 78% of the declarations for which tariffs have been paid.
The Supreme Court overturned the global tariffs imposed by Trump, affecting the economic policy of his administration.
Judge Richard Eaton ordered CBP to begin processing refunds, and the new mechanism could allow importers to avoid lawsuits to recover their money.
