The Trump administration is considering a plan for a summary rejection of asylum applications for immigrants, without offering them interviews, which would mark an escalation of the campaign to deport 1 million people per year. According to internal documents, the proposal would allow officials to reject applications filed a year after the arrival of immigrants. Rejected cases would be sent to immigration courts, where immigrants would have to fight for their status. This measure comes in the context of a dramatic overhaul of the legal immigration process, including increasing ICE's authority to pursue lawyers representing asylum seekers. Critics accuse the administration of undermining the right to a fair trial, while officials emphasize that the goal is to reduce the backlog of cases in immigration courts, which has exceeded 3 million. The administration has also suspended asylum applications at the US-Mexico border, citing an "invasion" of immigrants. This approach also includes a transformation of the immigration court system, with judges able to reject cases without a proper hearing.
