Germany is facing a severe truck driver shortage crisis, with a deficit of 120,000 workers, which severely affects supply chains. The logistics industry warns that the lack of personnel has reached a critical level, with thousands of trucks parked and orders canceled. Every year, between 30,000 and 35,000 drivers retire, while only 15,000-20,000 new drivers enter the system, exacerbating the problem.
The deficit is felt in the transport sector, with companies reducing fleets or refusing bids due to rising labor costs. Approximately 80% of goods are transported by road, and alternatives are limited, leading to dysfunctions in supply. The profession of truck driver is considered difficult, with insufficient wages and high entry barriers, discouraging potential candidates.
Although autonomous technologies can support operations, they cannot completely replace drivers, who remain essential for the security and responsibility of deliveries. Without improvements in working conditions and more attractive wages, the crisis will continue, affecting the availability of goods in the long term.
