Katrín Jakobsdóttir, former Prime Minister of Iceland, stated that the Icelandic language is in danger of extinction in just one generation due to the growing influence of the English language and artificial intelligence. In the context of a radical change in language usage, more and more Icelanders are choosing to communicate in English, and young people are exposed to materials in this language on social media. Katrín emphasizes the responsibility to preserve the Icelandic language, which has only 350,000 speakers. She also mentioned a partnership between the Ministry of Education of Iceland and Anthropic to promote the use of artificial intelligence in the Icelandic language. The co-author of her book, Ragnar Jónasson, argues that the language is in serious danger, and rapid changes could lead to its disappearance. Katrín highlighted the importance of a strong movement to protect the language, considering that it influences thinking and national identity. Although she acknowledges the opportunities offered by AI, she believes that the challenges are significant for the creative industry.
