Christine Lagarde, the president of the European Central Bank, warned that Europe is jeopardizing its future by delaying the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) and that it must act quickly to remove the obstacles that hinder the spread of this technology. In a speech delivered in Bratislava, Lagarde emphasized that, compared to the US and China, Europe has missed the opportunity to become a leader in the field of AI. She mentioned that, unlike previous technological revolutions, AI could bring tangible economic gains more quickly, making action urgent for EU member states.
Lagarde stressed that simply acquiring AI solutions will not be enough, as it will increase Europe's dependence on external suppliers. She called for the diversification of the AI supply chain and maintaining a minimum capacity in critical areas, such as chips and data centers. She also highlighted the need to improve interoperability, open standards, energy accessibility, and uniform regulations to boost competitiveness. Recently, the EU announced measures to reduce the regulatory burden in the field of AI and data, emphasizing the urgency of restoring Europe's competitiveness.
