The European Commission proposes extending the compliance deadline for high-risk AI systems until the end of 2027, instead of August 2026. This decision comes in the context of an ambitious law, the 'AI Act', which is set to be implemented gradually. Additionally, the Commission has rejected accusations of yielding to lobbyists, stating that the measures are intended to reduce bureaucratic burden. Large companies, such as Airbus and Lufthansa, have called for a 'pause' in the application of this law, fearing that the regulations will affect competitiveness against the United States and China. Furthermore, the European Commission intends to allow the use of personal data in AI development under certain conditions, which has raised concerns from NGOs and citizen rights advocates. They argue that the proposed changes could undermine current data protection legislation.
