The European Commission announced that TikTok and Meta Platforms (Facebook and Instagram) have violated the transparency obligations stipulated in the Digital Services Act (DSA).
According to the Commission, the two platforms did not provide adequate access to public data for researchers, which contravenes legislative requirements.
Additionally, Meta allegedly failed to provide users with simple mechanisms for reporting illegal content and clear procedures for contesting moderation decisions. Meta representatives dispute the allegations, stating that they have implemented changes to comply with the DSA, while TikTok claims to have provided access to researchers through its tools.
The European Commission has invited the companies to respond to the preliminary findings, and a potential non-compliance decision could lead to fines of up to 6% of global revenue.
This is part of Brussels' efforts to regulate digital platforms to increase transparency and protect users, especially minors.
